The green gold thrown away?
Or - how old avocados become new bio-materials👇🏽
There is no waste!
6 billion pounds of avocado are eaten each year.
The amount varies - from 8kg per person in Mexico to about 1.5kg in Europe.
The pits are normally thrown away.
That's a lot of waste.
BIOFASE in Mexico has created a process to turn that "waste into a product".
Bioplastic are a great alternative - and they are not (!) "the only one" solution for the plastics crisis.
The pros of bioplastics:
1. Fewer carbon emissions.
2. Reduced dependence on fossil resources.
3. Better end-of-life scenarios for biodegradability. They can be recycled.
4. Less Plastic Pollution.
5. Improved Food Safety
Remember also the cons:
1. Growing demand for bioplastics creates competition for food sources, contributing to the global food crisis.
2. Bioplastics won't biodegrade in a landfill.
3. Bioplastics encourage people to litter more.
4. Bioplastics contaminate plastic recycling streams.
5. Bioplastics are not the answer to marine litter
In short - there is no waste!
